Descript’s big idea, editing audio and video by editing a transcript, has been the heart of the product for years and is still its best feature. What has changed is the billing. Every plan now runs on two meters, media minutes and AI credits, and neither rolls over. So this review mostly answers one question: what does a podcast episode cost on each plan?
Do I earn from Descript? No. Descript runs an affiliate program, but I haven’t joined it, so every Descript link on this page is a plain link and I’m paid nothing if you subscribe. Descript didn’t see this review before it went live.
Scorecard
Descript on one receipt
| Time | Fast for spoken-word shows: you cut words in the transcript instead of scrubbing a waveform |
| Cost | Free; Hobbyist $16, Creator $24, Business $50 per person a month billed yearly ($24 / $35 / $65 billed monthly), checked 15 October 2026 |
| Output | Edited podcasts and talking-head videos, transcripts in 25 languages, captions, AI voice fixes |
| Real earning path | Editing podcasts for small businesses and solo hosts, priced per episode or as a monthly package |
| Overall | 6.9/10 |
Good buy: podcasters, course creators and marketers who mostly edit people talking and would rather edit a script than learn a full video editor.
Probably not for you: music or effects-heavy video work, anyone who needs forgiving refunds, and heavy daily users of the Underlord AI agent.
What I read, and how I scored it
I haven’t used Descript for paid client work, so none of this is a hands-on test. I read Descript’s pricing page, its help articles on credits, top-ups, refunds, privacy and voice cloning, the Terms of Service (updated 25 February 2025) and the affiliate terms, then the Trustpilot, G2 and Capterra pages, news coverage and three rivals’ pricing. All checked on 15 October 2026; the per-hour and per-episode figures are my own arithmetic.
| Area | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | 8/10 | Transcript editing is the most praised feature on Capterra (4.4 for ease of use); some find the editor cramped |
| Output quality | 7.5/10 | Good transcripts and cleanup tools; recent reviews report crashes, lost edits and failed AI jobs |
| Value for money | 7/10 | Creator works out cheap per media hour; credits expire monthly and Hobbyist can’t top up |
| Trust and support | 5/10 | 2.6 on Trustpilot, 43% one-star, a 48-hour refund window and complaints about reaching a human |
The overall 6.9 is the plain average of those four (6.875, rounded). If you edit in Descript every week and something here doesn’t match what you see, tell me through the contact page and I’ll check it.
Four things I only found in the help center and the terms
- Creator is the cheapest plan per hour of media, not Hobbyist. On yearly billing, Hobbyist’s $16 buys 10 hours, which is $1.60 an hour. Creator’s $24 buys 30 hours, so $0.80 an hour. Business costs $1.25. Creator costs $8 more a month and gives you three times the hours, so the “starter” plan is only cheap for small shows. It also can’t buy top-ups: run dry and you wait for renewal or upgrade.
- The two most-used cleanup tools have a price ceiling. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words cost at most 30 credits per file each time you apply them, however long the file. Underlord, the AI agent, has no fixed price at all: each run can charge for the agent’s thinking and for the tool it calls, and even chatting with it uses “a few” credits.
- “Saving up to 35%” is generous rounding. By my maths the yearly discount is 33.3% on Hobbyist, 31.4% on Creator and 23.1% on Business. No plan reaches 35%.
- Data sharing is a setting you have to switch off. The help center says no production model uses customer data, but section 8.4(e) of the terms allows training on your inputs and outputs unless you opt out. The switch is in App Settings, Profile, “Share data with Descript”. Only Enterprise drives have it off by default.

Descript in 2026: the company and the editor
Descript was founded in 2017 by former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason, spun out of his audio-guide company Detour. It bought voice start-up Lyrebird in 2019 (the origin of its voice cloning) and raised a $50 million Series C led by the OpenAI Startup Fund in November 2022. Since September 2025 the CEO has been Laura Burkhauser, with Mason as executive chairman.
- Text-based editing: delete a sentence in the transcript and it’s gone from the audio and video.
- Transcription in 25 languages, with 8+ speaker detection and multitrack support on every plan, Free included.
- AI tools that use credits: Studio Sound (voice cleanup), Remove Filler Words, Green Screen, Eye Contact, AI speech, avatars, generated video, and Underlord.
- Remote recording (Rooms): 5 to 25 hours a month on paid plans; a session counts once against media minutes, not once per guest.
- Integrations: imports from Zoom, SquadCast and Restream, publishing to YouTube and hosts such as Buzzsprout and Transistor, and timeline export to Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve and Pro Tools.
Descript’s own “Getting started” playlist on YouTube is the quickest way to see the transcript editing in action:
Plans and limits on 15 October 2026
| Plan | Per person a month (yearly / monthly billing) | Media minutes a month | AI credits a month | Export and storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 60 | 100, one time only | 720p with watermark, 5GB |
| Hobbyist | $16 / $24 | 600 (10 hours) | 400, no top-ups | 1080p, no watermark, 100GB |
| Creator | $24 / $35 | 1,800 (30 hours) | 800, top-ups allowed | 4K, 1TB |
| Business | $50 / $65 | 2,400 (40 hours) | 1,500, top-ups allowed | 4K, 2TB |
| Enterprise | Custom | Sized to team | Sized to team | Not listed |
The page doesn’t label which figure is which, but its checkout links use yearly billing and Sonix’s August 2026 breakdown lists the same pairs as yearly and monthly rates. Creator scales to three seats and Business to five, billed separately. Media minutes count anything you upload or record, transcribed or not.
What a 45-minute episode costs on each plan
Take a 45-minute interview cleaned with Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words: at their 30-credit ceilings, that’s up to 60 credits per file. The per-hour column loads the whole fee onto media, the worst case.
| Plan (yearly billing) | Cost per media hour | 45-minute episodes the minutes cover | Episodes the credits cover at 60 a file |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobbyist, $16 | $1.60 | 13 | 6 |
| Creator, $24 | $0.80 | 40 | 13 |
| Business, $50 | $1.25 | 53 | 25 |
Credits run out well before minutes, and that’s the part most reviews skip. If your show arrives as separate tracks per speaker, I’d assume each file is charged separately until Descript says otherwise, which halves the credit column for a two-person show. Credit top-ups cost $0.10 to $0.05 each depending on pack size (350 for $35 up to 4,000 for $200), so cleaning one more file costs $3 to $6 at worst. Extra media runs $5 to $3 an hour. Top-ups last 12 months and can’t be refunded.

Voice clones, client work and refunds: the terms in plain English
- Your output is yours. Section 8.4(a) gives you ownership of inputs and outputs “to the extent protectable under applicable law”, and 8.4(b) warns AI output may not be unique.
- Cloning needs the speaker’s own recorded consent. The person whose voice is cloned must read a fixed English statement aloud (“I want Descript to create an artificial version of my voice…”). Descript won’t clone a deceased person or AI-generated audio.
- Client work isn’t spelled out. Section 5.1 licenses the service for “your own personal or internal business use”, and 5.2 bars making it available to third parties. Nothing says you can’t edit a client’s podcast and hand over the file, but nothing says you can either. The tidiest set-up is the client owning the plan and adding you as an Editor; if you’d rather use your own, ask Descript support in writing. This isn’t legal advice.
- Refunds are tight. Plan refunds only within 48 hours of the invoice date, extra Editor seats within 7 days, top-ups never. Cancelling or downgrading takes effect at the end of the billing cycle with no prorated refund.
How users rate Descript: 1,401 reviews on three sites
- G2: 4.6 out of 5 from 928 reviews. G2’s page didn’t show me a breakdown of themes.
- Capterra: 4.6 out of 5 from 183 reviews (4.4 for ease of use, 4.3 for customer service). Praise centres on transcript editing and filler-word removal; recent complaints are crashes, lost edits, credits spent on failed AI jobs and delayed refunds.
- Trustpilot: 2.6 out of 5 from 290 reviews, 94 of them in the last 12 months. The split is 37% five-star and 43% one-star, and Descript had replied to 4% of negative reviews. From July to early October 2026 the repeat complaints were credits draining on AI edits that missed the brief, trouble cancelling, slow refunds, crashes after updates and automated support replies.
The gap between the sites is the story. People reviewing the editor on software directories mostly like it; people who write to Trustpilot usually arrive with a billing or credit problem.

Riverside, Adobe Podcast and Audacity instead?

| Otter.ai | Plans and limits in my Otter.ai review | You only need transcripts, not edited audio | |
| ElevenLabs | Credits and costs in my ElevenLabs review | You want AI narration rather than editing recorded speech | |
Riverside’s page warned that some details may be out of date, so confirm its prices at checkout.
Would I pay for Descript?
For a weekly interview podcast, yes: Creator billed yearly, with data sharing switched off on day one. It has the cheapest hour of media and lets you top up when a busy month eats the credits. I’d skip Hobbyist unless the show is short and monthly, and I’d keep Underlord to small jobs until I’d watched the Usage tab for a few weeks, since nobody can tell you in advance what a run will cost.
Refunds close after 48 hours, so edit one real episode on the free plan first.
Getting paid to edit in Descript
The most realistic earning route I found is podcast editing for small businesses and solo hosts. My guide covers Upwork’s published price ranges, a worked month in numbers and the consent rules for voice fixes.

Descript questions people ask
Is Descript free?
There’s a free plan with 60 media minutes a month, 100 AI credits once (they don’t refill), 5GB of storage and 720p exports with a watermark. No card is needed.
Do Descript AI credits roll over?
No. Unused media minutes and AI credits are lost when your plan renews. Bought top-ups are different: they last 12 months.
Can I clone someone else’s voice in Descript?
Only with their recorded consent: they have to read Descript’s consent statement aloud themselves, or send you a recording of it.
Does Descript train AI on my recordings?
Its help center says no production model uses customer data, but the terms allow training unless you opt out. Switch off “Share data with Descript” in App Settings, Profile.
Can I get a refund from Descript?
For a plan, only if you ask within 48 hours of the invoice date. Extra Editor seats have 7 days; top-ups are non-refundable.
