One of the more honest questions on r/n8n this year came from someone who’d reached an intermediate level with the tool: how are you all actually making money with it? The answers I found, across Reddit, n8n’s own forum and Indie Hackers, point the same way. The money isn’t in templates or “AI employees”. It’s in boring automations for small businesses, and in getting paid to keep them running. n8n is unusually good for that second part, because you can install it on a client’s own server.
The short version
What this takes
| Best method | Simple automations for local businesses, then a monthly care plan |
| Cost to learn | $0: the free self-hosted edition plus n8n’s free Academy courses |
| Client’s tool cost | €20 a month on n8n Cloud billed yearly, or a server from about $6.50 a month on a two-year term |
| Going rate | $40 to $100 an hour, per Upwork’s n8n hiring page |
| Income | Not guaranteed |
If you’re new to the tool, read my n8n review first. It explains how executions are counted and what the license allows, and both matter when you quote a client.
Five ways to earn with n8n
| Method | Who pays you | What it can pay | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automations for local businesses | Business owners | A fixed project fee, plus a care plan | Medium |
| Self-hosting and care plans | Clients who want their data on their own server | A setup fee, then a monthly retainer | Medium, ongoing |
| AI agents, sold as pilots | Businesses with lots of enquiries | A paid pilot, then a bigger build | High |
| Templates | Other n8n users | Little, unless they bring you clients | Low to medium |
| Affiliate program | n8n | 30% of Cloud payments for 12 months | Needs an audience |
Method 1: Boring automations for local businesses
The most upvoted thread about money I found on r/n8n is titled “My dumbest automations make the most money and I can’t even be mad about it.” Another says the automations making real money are “embarrassingly simple”. Both make the same point: a short workflow that never breaks keeps a client longer than a clever system that needs babysitting.
For a clinic, a gym or a shop, that means jobs like these: new website enquiries logged in the CRM and answered within a minute, missed calls followed up by text, appointment reminders, review requests after a visit, or invoices checked for duplicates. One r/n8n member built that last one for a friend who had paid the same invoice twice.
Learn it properly first
n8n Academy is free: a Quickstart course plus three Foundations courses covering the basics, integrations and error handling, and the AI Agent node. Each one comes with a completion certificate and badge, and an official certification exam is listed as coming soon. Build three working automations for yourself or someone you know before you charge anyone.
Price the result, not the hours
Upwork’s hiring page for n8n experts says they generally cost $40 to $100 an hour, and puts a single-workflow automation at $500 to $2,000 as a fixed-price project. The bottom of the market is crowded, though. When a beginner on n8n’s forum asked for paid help with one “simple workflow” in September 2026, the thread drew nearly 200 replies, mostly from freelancers, with offers including $30 flat, €80, a $75 diagnostic and $290 fixed. You won’t win a race on price. Pick one type of business, learn the software it already uses, and sell a specific outcome.
Worked example
A physiotherapy clinic misses about five calls a day while staff are with patients. You build a workflow that texts each missed caller a booking link within a minute and logs the call in the clinic’s spreadsheet. That’s about 150 runs a month on n8n Cloud, well inside Starter’s 2,500, and the clinic pays n8n and its SMS provider directly.
You charge $600 for the build, inside Upwork’s $500 to $2,000 range for a single workflow, plus $100 a month to monitor and maintain it. Three clients like this would bring $1,800 in setup fees and $300 a month. These are illustrative prices you’d set yourself, and finding three clients takes time.
Where the first clients come from
Businesses you already know are the easiest start. Online, Upwork listed 532 open n8n jobs when I checked on 3 October 2026, though some budgets are placeholders, like $10 for a CRM build. n8n’s community forum has job posts too. In late September, one looking for a builder in India’s time zone offered a paid test of ₹10,000, about $115, to automate weekly marketing reports, with retainer work to follow.
If your clients would rather use a hosted tool with a gentler learning curve, the same approach works with Make. My guide to making money with Make.com covers its credit rules and affiliate terms.

Method 2: Host it for them, then keep it running
This is where n8n beats Make for a freelancer. A client who would rather not put customer data in another company’s cloud can run n8n’s free Community Edition on a server they own, and n8n’s license FAQ says you can “charge the client for installing, configuring, building workflows, and maintaining n8n on their behalf”.
Have the client rent the server in their own name, so it stays theirs if you part ways. Typical costs:
| Server | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Hetzner CX23 | €5.49 plus €0.50 for an IPv4 address, excluding VAT |
| Hostinger KVM 1, with n8n preinstalled | $6.49 on a 24-month term, then $11.99 |
| Hostinger KVM 2 (2 vCPU, 8 GB) | $8.99 on a 24-month term, then $14.99 |
| DigitalOcean Basic (2 vCPU, 4 GB) | $24 |
n8n’s own guide says a small server is enough for most use, but recommends at least 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of RAM if you want the n8n Assistant.
What the care plan covers
- Updates. n8n’s docs say to update “at least once a month” and to check the release notes for breaking changes first.
- Security. In January 2026, a flaw rated 10 out of 10 (CVE-2026-21858) let attackers read files on servers running n8n 1.65 to 1.120 through certain form-based workflows. A server nobody updates is exactly the kind it hurts.
- Backups. The database and the encryption key. Without the key, the credentials in a restored database can’t be decrypted.
- Upgrades. n8n 3.0, scheduled for October 2026, requires Docker for self-hosted installs and removes old nodes such as Function, Cron and HTML Extract. Moving a client’s older workflows across is real, billable work right now.
As for price, one freelancer on n8n’s forum advertises a care plan from $150 a month covering “health checks, fixes included, a short monthly report”. Meanwhile, n8n setup gigs on Fiverr start at around $25, which tells you the installation itself is a commodity. What clients pay for is someone being responsible for it every month.
Keep the license on your side
The safest setup is the one above: n8n on the client’s server, with workflows in the client’s name. The license FAQ also allows building and running workflows for clients on your own instance, but an older n8n support article says hosting and managing clients’ workflows and credentials in your instance needs an Enterprise license. If you want to run one server for many clients, email license@n8n.io first and keep the reply.
Method 3: AI agents, sold as paid pilots
n8n’s AI Agent node lets you build assistants that answer enquiries, qualify leads or draft replies from a client’s own documents, and there’s demand for them. In August 2026, a life insurance business posted on n8n’s forum asking for a pipeline that texts new leads within 60 seconds, qualifies them through an AI conversation and books calls. It drew more than 150 replies, with fixed quotes including $750 and $950 for a first phase.
Sell this kind of work as a short paid pilot, not a big-bang build. Agents need testing against real conversations, and the client pays for the AI model on top of n8n, either through their own API account or with n8n’s Gateway credits on the cloud. Keep a person in the loop for anything that commits the business, like refunds, bookings or quotes.
Method 4: Templates, mostly as a shop window
Selling workflow templates looks like passive income. The evidence says otherwise. n8n’s own library already offers more than 10,000 free community templates. In September 2026, a builder on Indie Hackers described making six polished workflows and a 95-node insurance pipeline, then promoting them in developer communities: “0 clicks. 0 sales. Exactly $0 in revenue.” What did sell was one done-for-you build of the insurance pipeline, for around $350. The author’s conclusion: developers rebuild templates instead of buying them, and the business owners who would pay aren’t in developer communities.
Templates still earn their keep as proof of skill. Submit your best ones to n8n’s template library to get your name in front of buyers. n8n’s template hub does list some paid templates (an n8n staff member explained how their previews work in March 2026), but I couldn’t find n8n’s terms for selling them published anywhere, so don’t plan around it.
Method 5: The n8n affiliate program
n8n pays affiliates 30% of a referral’s n8n Cloud payments for their first year. It runs on PartnerStack, and anyone can apply. The details that matter:
- Only n8n Cloud counts. The program rewards referrals to the cloud plans, Starter and Pro. Self-hosted customers don’t earn you anything.
- No paid ads of any kind. n8n says paid ad activity gets you removed from the program.
- Payouts go to PayPal once a month, and only when your balance reaches €100.
- Commission is based on n8n’s “net earnings” for each subscription, which the program doesn’t define, so it may come to a little less than 30% of the list price.
- The cookie length isn’t published.
On annual prices, a Starter customer is worth up to about €72 to you and a Pro customer €180. You’d need two annual Starter referrals just to reach the €100 payout minimum. Your own clients are the most natural referrals, as long as you tell them you earn a commission. Template creators can also add their affiliate ID to their template links.
What the license lets you sell
| Fine to sell | Not allowed under the free license |
|---|---|
| Building workflows for clients | Hosting n8n as a service where clients build their own workflows |
| Installing and maintaining n8n on a client’s server | White-labelling n8n by removing its branding |
| Setup, maintenance and consulting services | Letting your product’s users build or configure workflows |
| Products that use n8n behind the scenes | Forking n8n to launch your own automation product |
That’s from n8n’s license FAQ. Remember the caveat above about holding client credentials on your own server.
Mistakes that cost you clients
- Schedules that burn executions. A workflow that runs every five minutes uses about 8,640 executions a month, more than three times Starter’s 2,500, and on the cloud the runs over the limit simply fail. Use webhooks and app triggers wherever you can.
- Building in your own cloud account. If you part ways, the client loses everything. Build in their account or on their server.
- Leaving a server unpatched. Self-hosted means someone owns the updates. If that’s you, put it in the care plan and do it.
- Installing random community nodes. n8n warns they have full access to the server. Use verified ones or none.
- Selling “AI employees”. Sell a specific job done faster, measured in hours saved.
You’ll enjoy this if… you like logic puzzles, you don’t mind a little code, and you’re happy to be the person a business calls when something breaks.
It’s probably not for you if… you want passive income, or you’d rather not be responsible for someone else’s server.

Making money with n8n: FAQ
Can you really make money with n8n?
Yes, mostly by building and maintaining automations for businesses. Templates and “passive income” rarely pay. Upwork lists hundreds of open n8n jobs, but the low end is crowded, so specialising in one kind of business helps.
How much do n8n freelancers charge?
Upwork’s hiring page says $40 to $100 an hour, and $500 to $2,000 for a single-workflow project. Offers for small fixes on n8n’s forum go much lower, from about $30 to $300.
Can I charge clients for n8n work under the license?
Yes. n8n’s license FAQ allows charging for building, setting up and maintaining workflows, including installing n8n on a client’s server. Hosting n8n as a service where clients build their own workflows isn’t allowed under the free license.
Is selling n8n templates worth it?
Usually not on its own. n8n’s library has more than 10,000 free templates, and builders who’ve tried selling to other developers report little or nothing. Use templates as a portfolio that brings in service work.
Does n8n have an affiliate program?
Yes: 30% of n8n Cloud payments for a referral’s first year, paid through PartnerStack to PayPal once your balance reaches €100. Paid ads aren’t allowed.
The figures in this guide are public rates and worked examples, not income claims. What you earn depends on your skills, your clients and your market. This isn’t legal advice: confirm anything unusual with n8n’s licensing team, and check data-protection rules where you and your clients work. I don’t earn a commission from n8n at the time of writing.
